NOW COMPLETED

WATER FOR KEREPEEHI SETTLERS VERY PLEASED COST OF WORK KEPT DOWN *‘l am glad to be able to report that all settlers supplying dairy factories from Kerepeehi Block have now signed orders for annual payments covering loan for water and 1 county rates. .Others not supplying have given written guarantees which aie equally water-tight. A number of the settlers have individually called or telephoned and asked me to convey their personal thanks to the council for both the water and the terms under which it was made available, reported the county clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney to the July meeting of the Hauraki 'Plains County Council. The report added: — “In the whole supply there were nine extra services asked for and installed. On a flat basis these amounted to £& 5s Od each for material used and accounts have been rendered to the settlers concerned. A circular sent to all settlers is submitted 1 for approval. “The amount of settlers’ piping used in reticulatiorf is embodied on a voucher before this meeting, and I rqponimend that these amounts ! be paid over to the three committees concerned. The prices are those arrived at by the engineer and thb writer, accepted by the- settlers and ’ embodied in the estimate. . There is still a bit of back-filling to be done, the cost of which will be infinitesimal and one 3in. canal crossing to be completed. The cost to date is under £45001 nett but will probably reach £4700 on completion. Mr Adams estimate was £5300. -The difference is mostly accounted for by the close supervision, of Mr 'Bradford, who kept a daily check on all labour costs for trenching and laying and by the substitution of the county grader for the more expensive trenching machine on which that part of the estimates was based. “The greater part of the £4700' is subject to £1 for £1 subsidy. The- surplus under the estimate will be useful in the bringing in of Koterepou.pouai stream as the (Lands Department estimate £4ooo' of which the Kerepeehi Block settlers are to find £lloo'o appears rather light. “As things appear at present the position of the interest-free loan to the settlers is as follows:—

of £4'ooo so much the better for all concerned', but at present everything has been kept within both estimated cost and subsidy available. “Principal items of cost to date have been as follows:—
