DAIRY PRODUCERS’ ASSN. AIM

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —In reply to Mr Jas. C. Miller may I correct a wrong impression. At the outset we decided not to interfere, or attempt to smash the Farmers’ Union, but to steer clear of that body and to set up a separate dairy organisation. We did not criticise them, 'but to our dismay discovered that some of its members started to swell our meetings as at Turua and incorrect statements were made compelling our speakers, like “Pat” Maloney Friis and myself to reply strongly. It is but natural that some of the men who have given years of service in the Farmers’ Union do feel alarmed with our progress and opposition to us became inspired. This development does more harm to the union than good.

' A monetary correction is not the principal aim of the Dairy Producers’ Association, but a much broader basis of finding a mobilised backing to the men who lead the industry. With parallel strength to the Federation of Labour or better, the industry will be rehabilitated. So short a time ago, the disquieting knowledge of apathetic understanding of the effect of legislation upon our industry was alarming. With the advent of the Dairy Producers’ Association, its bold declaration to fight for justice, and the swing to the movement by dairy suppliers the organisations in existence wakened a little, but they cannot succeed as they stand to-day. The aim of the Dairy 'Producers’ Organisation is not to tackle monetary problems only, but local and national and especially those legislatively imposed upon us by the powers that be.

Since the Turua meeting we have had much success and I am glad to say, many prominent men have joined us. Furthermore, prominent men in the farmers’ union see in our movement now, something that has been lacking in the past. Let us forget differences and refrain from back hitting, meet on common ground and find the correct, and powerful approach to the Government and meanwhile strive to furnish the required foodstuffs for the people of ‘Britain. Give greater thought to the small farmer and his wife 'and carry out our work as trustees of the mem overseas. This ideal is the one like Pat Maloney and 109‘others are seeking, and we have faith and confidence that we are this time on the right road to achieving it. —I am, etc.,

R. McINTYRE, Hon. Sec. D.P.A Kereone, MorrinsviUe.
