FORTY YEARS AGO

PROTECTION SOUGHT

CLAIMS AT KARANGAHAKE OHINEMURI LIGHT & POWER CO. (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of October 15, 1903.) Mr Porritt on behalf of the New Zealand Crown Mines Company, applied at the Warden’s Court yesterday for twelve months protection for a number of claims at Karangahake. Mr (Porritt read a declaration by Mr Daw, which stated that it was proposed to prospect these claims by means of tunnelwhich now went through other portions of the company’s property. It was proposed that th tunnel should be 11,000 feet in length. The Warden said that the applications would be forwarded to the Minister.

An application by the Ohinemuri Light and 'Power Company for two business sites at Mackaytown came before the Warden yesterday. Mr ‘Porritt, who appeared for the applicant company, said that the. company proposed supplying gas to Karangahake, and this ground was wanted for a business site. It was proposed to do excavating on the ground and to put up a big receiver. It is hoped that the gas would be into Karangahake within three months. The Warden remarked there were only a limited number of business sites in Mackaytown, and he would need to be satisfied that the site was to be used for bona fide purposes. If work was started on the ground the application would be probably granted without any trouble. In the meantime the application would be adjourned to October 22.
