ARTS AND CRAFTS AFTERNOON IN PAEROA PATRIOTIC FUNDS AIDED VERY INTERESTING FUNCTION Figures speak for themselves and the £22 raised by the combined of the Paeroa Women’s Institute and members of the Paeroa Ladies’ Patriotic Committee clearly reflects the capable manner in which the Arts and Crafts Exhibition held in the Civic' Hall on Friday was organised. Great interest was taken .by the large number of people present, and judging from the general remarks passed, the function was voted not only enjoyable hut most interesting. Proceedings were opened by the singing of the National Anthem, after which the Mayoress, Mrs E. Edwards, declared the function open and called upon the president of the Women’s Institute, Mrs J. J. Hill who briefly stated that success was due to the people of Paeroa and the surrounding districts who had loaned their exhibits. A feature of the afternoon was the display of antiques which were varied and most interesting. Miniature portraits, jewellery, carved wooden ornaments, dolls, teasets and numerous pieces of very old china were among the many exhibits.

The arts , and crafts table showed to advantage the very fine hand-work and crafts of all description. Paeroa may be justly proud of the talen displayed. An overseas table was arranged with exhibits of handwork sent to New Zealand during the past as well as the present war.

A bring-and-buy stall did excellent business. Competitions held were won by Mesdames H. Morgan, G*. Neil and Jacqueline Dent. Afternoon tea which was served by the ladies was a delicious one. During the afternoon several items were enjoyed. Mrs J. L. Brown’s pianoforte solo was warmly received and the well-known ■ play “The Old., Ladys Shows Her Medals.” was presented by an excellent cast compris-' ing Mesdames Tait, I. Homer, J. A. Mitchell and M. Hollinshead.

A musical extravaganza entitled “The Wedding of the Painted Doll,” was a colourful and original item. Mrs M. K. McKee was the soloist and the wedding party consisted of:—Bride,/ Mrs G. Spinks; groom, Mrs A. Whisker; parson, Mrs M. Hollinshead; mother, Mrs E. P. George; father, Mrs F. Marsh; bridesmaids, Mr J. A. Mitchell and Miss Betty Smith; flower girl, Miss McKee; page boy, G. Spinks. Mrs Edwards took the opportunity to thank one and all for attending and on behalf of the Paeroa Patriotic Committee, conveyed thanks to the Women’s Institute for the excellent part played by its members. Thanks were also accorded the general public for attending and all those who had helped in any way to make such a success of the function.

Money raised is to swell the 1943 All Purposes Patriotic Appeal.
