MIRTH AND MUSIC

“SEVEN DAYS’ LEAVE” PROGRAMME AT REGENT WEALTH OF NOVELTY NUMBERS Bubbling with mirth and music, “Seven Days’ Leave,” will come to the Regent Theatre on Saturday and Monday to establish itself as one of the most diverting shows of the entire year.

Go-stars Victor Mature and Lucille Ball vie with a large cast of entertainers, two “name” bands, two famous radio programmes and a wealth, of novelty numbers to present something really new in the way of film, entertainment in this RKO-Radio feature. The result can be highly recommended.

Timeiy as. well as funny, the plot revolves around the efforts of , an American soldier to win himself a fortune and a wife, both under difficulties. With only a 'few days to accomplish this before his regiment sails overseas, he gets all mixed up with the terms of a freak will, two girls between whom he has* to choose, and a group of Army buddies, determined to see that things are done right by their pal. It’s all very light-hearted and gay and frequently hilarious, while two stunning production numbers and some seven eminently catchy tunes by Jimmy McHugh and Frank Loesser, interpreted by the Freddy* Martin and Les Brown orchestras, more than take care 'of the musical angles of the picture.

Mature as the soldier, Miss Ball as a haughty New York sociality, and Mapy Cortes, the Puerto Rican favourite, as the third corner of the romantic triangle, all turn in grand performances. Harold (The Great Gildersleeve) 'Peary as a shystel- lawyer; Peter Lind Hayes, BuddyClark and Arnold Stang as Mature’s fellow-draftees; Ginny Simms,. Marcy McGuire, Wallace Ford and ' Walter Reed all do excellently. Ralph Edwards’ “Truth or Consequences” programme and the “The Court of Missing Heirs” w r ith Charles Victor, both play important parts in the story. FINALLY TO-NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE “Red River Valley” and “Pittsburg: Kid,” will show Anally to-night at the Regent Theatre. i
