IMPROMPTU HOCKEY GAME

MATCH PLAYED AT PAEROA

HOCKEY CHALLENGE GAME

(From the Ohinemuri Gazette (of October 13 1903) On Thursday afternoon an impromptu hockey match came off ■between our ladies club and eight members of the Majeroni Dramatic Company. It was quite one o’clock when the challenge was received for a game that day and owing to the energetic action of the secretary by four o’clock a team was mustered for the fray. At the request of the gentlemen, the spells were reduced from 35 minutes to 25 minutes, and it was decided not to penalise them for “sticks” during the first spell, which resulted in favour of the home team four goals to nil. The second spell resulted in no scoring on either side but it was evident that the Majeronis were over-matched from the start. One goal was scored by the ladies’ team but was disallowed by their captain on the ground that the ball glanced from a player before passing between the posts This however though allowed as a goal by most rules, is l not counted as such by the Association rules. The game, though not remarkable for any particularly brilliant play, was a very enjoyable one, the greatest consideration and good humour being shown by both sides. Tea and refreshments were provided for the visitors, and the wonder was how they were provided a,t such short notice.
