FLOWER SHOW

WHITIANGA SPRING BLOOMS

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL FUNCTION

The Mercury Bay Women’s Institute held their Spring Flower Show in the Whitianga Public Hall on Saturday afternoon, September 11. There were many entries and the class of blooms on show was of a very high standard.

In addition to the long stall upon which the flowers were arranged, there was a bring-and-buy, produce, Blind Institute stall and a special section displaying the home spun and knitted garments made from natural wool.

In declaring the flower show open, Mrs Ralph as president of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute said the display of blooms was “undoubtedly magnificent.” Mrs Ralph continued to say, “This time almost to the day, four years ago, I had the pleasure and the privilege of opening the Spring Flower Show. I would like to quote again to-day an extract I read that day aftei- the commencement of the war: ‘lf all the politicians and leaders of all the countries could be persuaded to have a garden and'; be compelled to spend one hour in that - garden e&ch morning , they would not have a thought of war and would improve their minds.’ ”

The total proceeds-of the afternoon were £lB 18s Bd.

Afternoon tea was served to the public, the ladies doing splendid work behind the scenes. At the conclusion of the show, the flower exhibits were sold to the public and bidding was keen. -Results:—
