HELP SOUGHT

.... w i ATHLETICS IN PAEROA LETTER TO THE BOROUGH CUTTING OF RUNNING TRACK In an endeavour to re-establish athletics in Paeroa during the coming season the secretary of the Paeroa Harrier Club, Mr F. D. Sharp, wrote to Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council seeking the council’s assistance to maintain a running track in the Paeroa Domain. The letter from the harrier club stated that at a meeting of his club held recently it had been decided to make an endeavour to- conduct athletic sports meetings in Paeroa during the coming season, pointing out that with the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club being* in recess there was no form whatever of athletics for the youth of the town to- participate in during their leisure hours. “You will agree that this is a drastic state of affairs,” added the letter. “With this, thought in mind we therefore appeal to you as members of the council to assist us wherever possible to provide some form of competition for the youth of Paeroa. Remember the appeal of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. Parry, when he asked all sporting bodies to endeavour to carry on with their activities during wartime.

Appeal To Council “Our appeal to the council is to assist us by keeping the grass cut on the Paeroa Domain. We realise the expense entailed in keeping the Domain in first-class condition but would like to point out that we will not be conducting championship meetigs and if the grass was cut every three weeks it would be sufficient.” Mr D. G. McMillan asked whether Mr Sharp was working in conjunction with the 'Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. He pointe® out that the club, which no doubt knew the position, had gone into recess and he doubted whether the harriers would function as an athletic club. He suggested that the borough recommend that the Harrier Club contact the Paeroa Amateur' Athletic and Cycling Club in an endeavour to bring down a report on the possibilities of again establishing athletics in Paeroa. The council adopted this' proposal.
