TAXIS TO KENNEDY’S BAY

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your issue of June 23, Messrs Denize Bros, state that they will not run their taxis, either to Whangapoua or Kennedy’s Bay “owing to the bad state of the roads.” If that assertion is correct —is not the safety of the travelling public of paramount importance ? Why have they not discontinued theii’ taxi service forthwith? Do they not convey manures etc., over both routes by their trucks P. T. Pickering’s passenger and goods service operates from Kennedy’s Bay and H. M. Hawkeswood’s service likewise from Whangapoua. If the firm carries out the obligations of its licence only in part then it is no longer a public amenity. This afternoon I went to Kennedy’s Bay with the county engineer and apart from some shallow depressions with a little water lying around, as the result of very recent heavy rains, I without hesitation, flatly contradict Messrs Denize Bros.’ statement.

In presenting my annual report to the Coromandel County Council recently, I stated that the roads throughout the county generally were in a ■better condition than ever before and I now reiterate that. In view of the fact that Denize Bros, have the monopoly of the only two taxi licences in the Coromandel township, perhaps they may be prepared to transfer one of those licences to someone who would be willing to give full service to the public an run on the roads in question.—l am, etc., C. C. RAE, ■County Chairman. Coromandel, 25:6:43.
