KUAOTUNU FAREWELL
PTE. J. DAVIS HONOURED PRESENTATION FROM DISTRICT A large number of Kuaotunu residents met in the Kuaotunu hall recently to bid farewell to Private John Davis. After a successful card party Mr T. E. Simpson, acting on behalf of the 'settlers presented Private Davis with a purse of money. He said that Pte. Davis to whom they had all met to do honour, was the third of the Wharekau family to go overseas, having been proceeded by Ptes. Ned and Benny, the latter having been twice wounded. Continuing, Mr Simpson said that they all knew of the great deeds done by the New Zealand Division and that he had every confidence that the lad they were now farewelling would do his bit towards maintaining the reputation of the Division. Pte. Davis in replying said that although he had only two days’ leave, it had given him great pleasure to spend one of his evenings with the Kuaotunu people. He thanked them for their kindness in entertaining him and for their gift. . The evening closed with the singing of “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow.” A dainty supper had been served earlier in the evening, the arrangements having been in the hands, of Mesdames Alfred Simpson, Ross Simpson, H. E. Turner, Chapman and Alistair Turner. The prizewinners were Mrs Ross Simpson, Miss Chapman, Mr Alistair Turner and Pte. J. Davis.
