THAMES COAST RESERVE LETTER SENT TO MINISTER NAME TO HONOUR MAORI V.C. To perpetuate the memory of the gallant Maori soldier Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu who was recently awarded the V.C., the section-holders of the Hetherington estate on the Thames Coast propose calling the beach in front of their property Ngarimu Beach. The secretary of the Thornton s Bay Domain Board, Mr W. Hammond, has sent the following letter to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mi W. E. Parry:— “The Hetherington estate, of approximately 25 acres, has been cut up into seaside sections. Most oi the sections have been sold. Application

has been made to the Government to have the recreation reserve .of this estate proclaimed a public domain. “The sea frontage of this estate extends from the mouth of the Otohi stream northwards to Thornton’s Bay. This long stretch of sandy beach, approximately 300 yards in length and affording excellent facilities for safe bathing, has, so far as we can leam, no name. “The section-holders of the above domain respectfully request that the public domain be known as the Ngarimu Domain and that the bay, extending northward of the Otohi stream, be known as Ngarimu Beach. “In choosing this name the residents wish to help in perpetuating the memory of the gallant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, V.C.” The name will be placed before the board for acceptance at its first general meeting.
