STATE HOUSES FOR PAEROA MANY PEOPLE SEEKING HOMES The housing problem in Paeroa and the small number of State houses which to date had been allocated to the town were subjects discussed at Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce when it was decided to make application to have some of the houses which the Government proposed to erect this year built in Paeroa. Mr R. L. Darley, in raising the; question of the lack of State . houses in Paeroa urged that the chamber make application to have at least a few of the houses which the Government proposed to erect in the near future built in Paeroa. Many people to-day were unable to secure a house of any, kind in Paeroa and the he els and boarding houses were full cf men who were seeking accommodation for their families. Neighbouring towns seemed to ' have more State houses than the number in Paeroa and Mr Darley urged ‘hat the chamber take steps to se that the town was not overlooked when building started in. the near future. He suggested that the chamber make application to the Minister through the member for the district, pointing out that there was a number of family men in Paeroa employed by the State who had not been able to secure houses up to the present. Mr P. H. Leigh said he had been astounded at the number of State houses erected in other towns of similar size to Paeroa. He quoted Whakatane where there were over 100 erected while there were only 22 in Paeroa. Whakatane was not much bigger than Paeroa. The Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, said he was pleased to see the chamber taking the matter up. If a further 20 houses were erected they could be filled and hardly affect the present demand At present families who would have settled in Paeroa w6re not able to get houses and had gone to other towns. Mr R. A. Mace said he knew of , a family with six children who had left Paeroa during the last week because they could not secure a house. It was decided to make application to the authorities for more State houses to be erected in Paeroa.
