PLAINS PROTEST

REHABILITATION MATTERS

NO FARMERS APPOINTED REPRESENTATION WANTED A protest at the manner in which the Thames Rehabilitation Committee had been established was voiced at Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council when it was agreed to ask the Rehabilitation Board to give farmers representation on the committee and that the representation be widely spread over the whole area controlled by the committee.

.Mr D. G. McMillan said the way the committee had been constituted was not just, especially in a matter so vital. Farmers were entitled to have a voice on such an important matter. He urged that the council protest against the manner in ' which the Thames Rehabilitation Committee had been appointed.

“It is wrong that the whole of the personnel should be drawn from Thames,” added Mr McMillan, “If we take this without protest then the Hauraki Plains has lost its punch,” continued Mr McMillan. The chairman, Mr C. W. Parfitt, agreed that most of the rehabilitation in the Thames Valley area would

be on farm land and therefore there should be practical farmers on the committee. He considered members of the R.S.A. should constitute the personnel of the Rehabilitation Committee.

' It was decided to protest to the Rehabilitation Board at the manner in which the Thames Rehabilitation Committee had been set up asking that there be more farmer representatives, well spread, on the committee appointed to handle rehabilitation in the Thames Valley. It was also agreed to ask who was responsible for setting up the present committee and for selecting personnel.
