PTE. A. E. F. YARDLEY FORMER GAZETTE EMPLOYEE Word was received by Mr and Mrs A. G. Yardley, of Morrinsville, on Saturday that their youngest son, Private A. E .F. Yardley, had been killed in action in North Africa on March 26.

“Bert” Yardley was born at Matamata but was educated at the Morrinsville District High School. He served his apprenticeship in the job printing department. of the 'Cargill Publishing Co., Ltd., and prior to joining' the Forces was a member of the staff of the Hauraki Plains Gazette. He played. Rugby football for the Morrinsville Old Boys Club and was a member of the Morrinsville school team which- won the Gwynne Shield. Though he did not play much cricket he was noted as being a firstclass fieldsman and was never known to miss a catch.

“Bert” was 22 years of age, and had about two years’ service, mostly in New Zealand. He was one of the 25 guerillas chosen from Narrow Neck to make their own way to Whangarei to take part' in a mock battle. He handed in his stripes with ■other Matamata and Morrinsville ■“cobbers” before leaving New Zealand.

Private Yardley was a ‘Past Noble Grand of the Loyal Morrinsville Lodge, No. 81Q2, and is stated to have ■been the youngest member, to have parsed through the offices.

PTE. K.\P. O’DWYER

PATETONGA RESIDENT Reported killed in ' action, private K. P. O’Dwyer was the son of Mr A. O’Dwyer, of Patetonga, a member of a well-known family of that district. Private O’Dwyer enlisted at the cutbreak of the war but was turned down for a time for health reasons, finally entering the Army about 12 months., after the outbreak of war.

Private O’Dwyer yas taken prisoner by the Italians last July 'but was released by his comrades when, the New Zealanders retook the post. Private O’Dwyer came from the Taihape district.

WELL-KNOWN FOOTBALLER

Lance-Corporal Allen Edwin Fisher, who is reported as killed in action in the recent casualty list issued by the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is the fourth son of Mr and Mrs J. Fisher of Coromandel.

Lance-Corporal Fisher, who is 27 years of age, was well known in both Paeroa and the Hauraki Plains, working in that district and playing football both for Paeroa and the Plains. He sailed with the Third Echelon and has been wounded three times while fighting with the New Zealand Division.
