GONE ARE THE DAYS
VERANDAH POSTS DISAPPEAR UP-TO-DATE SHOP PREMISES 'Gone are the days of the highly ornamental cast-iron verandah posts connected with business premises in Wellington. For several generations verandahs and posts supporting them were inseparable from ,up-to-date shop premises in a city. Not only did they support the verandah which extended over the footpath, but in the days of horsedrawn traffic these posts were considered a Carrier between the public and the horses.
However, this protection was ren dered unnecessary when the motor
car drove horses off the roads, and the cantilever verandah became the accepted thing. Here and there in Wellington there are still Sections of streets with post verandahs, but they are becoming gradually fewer as new and improved structures take their place. Such an improvement is being made in Willis street by the alterations that are being made to King’s Chambers, a city corporation property.
