THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. "Public Service.” MONDAY, APRIL 12, 1943 COLLECTIVE EFFORT

Too often in these days the public is given misleading impressions as to the continuing value of social services other than those devised and controlled by the State. It is more than ever desirable, therefore, that the attention of the community should be directed on appropriate occasions to the vast field of social work still being undertaken—the developed—in sound, painstaking and unselfish fashion by organisations which have been built on the faith and effort of individuals. These organisations continue to play an invaluable, indeed essential, part. In some directions their work was never more needed that it is to-day. For 60 years the Salvation Army in New Zealand has expanded, steadily and fruitfully, a religious and social work that has become part and parcel of the life of the country. Its record from small beginnings, as traced in a news, article published to 7 day, is a remarkable one, and the congratulations of the whole community will be extended to its leaders and adherents on the occasion of. the organisation’s Diamond Jubilee.

Magnificent work for the men of the Services was carried out by the Salvation Army in the Great War, and an equally great and courageous service—often in difficult and perilous circumbeing undertaken in the fighting zones of the present conflict. The spirit animating this Army has been one of sturdy and practical Christianity—. a powerful collective effort inspired by the faith and initiative of its founder.
