PARENTS MEET

I ELECTION OF OFFICERS

VERY SMALL ATTENDANCE LACK OF INTEREST DEPLORED The annual meeting of the Paeroa 'District High School Parents’ Association was held in the Labour Room, •Paeroa, on Monday, Mrs S. Wheeler presiding over a small attendance.

Regret and disappointment, were expressed that parents appeared to ■be so apathetic in a movement which had the wglfare of the children as its entire aim. Apologies were received from Mesdames G. A. Gamble, Thomas, H. Darby and Whisker. The president’s annual report read as follows:—

- It is once again my privilege to present the annual report of the Paeroa Parents’ Association. The past year has been one of unceasing activity on the part of the executive and my sincere thanks go to every member for their wholehearted support and co-operation. I think a special thanks is dud to our secretary, Mrs Gleadow, for her splendid efforts during her term of office. Considerable Funds Raised Our balance sheet shows a credit of £3 14s lid but this represents just a fraction of the finance handled during the year. Our executive was asked by the school committee to assist in raising the necessary amount of money for the purchase of a picture projector. The' first joint effort was a rag and bottle drive. Later a garden party was held at Mrs Gleadow’s residence and recently a very successful parents’ day was held in the High School grounds. By the united efforts of all committees concerned the necessary amount was realised so that now the much longed for projector may one day be a dream come true. Our assistance was asked for during the cadet camp tield in Paeroa during August, and was very willingly given.

In December our association assisted Miss Murray to organise her annual primers’ Christmas party. This delightful function is thoroughly enjoyed by both parents and pupils and is a credit to the infant staff. Thanks Expressed

During the year our organisation had the wholehearted support and co-operation of the school committee and school staff. To them we tender our thanks. To the Press we offer oui* grateful appreciation and to all who assisted our efforts in any way possible. This committee will always remember the generous response to our appeal for sugar from parents who though having only a small amount were still willing to give a little.

The interest and encouragement shown by Mr James Thorn, M.P., in our activities is worthy of our grateful thanks. Task of Child of To-day

The scho.ol child of to-day must of necessity be the one to “carry on,” and little can we dream just how difficult a task it may prove. Let us, as parents, endeavour to give them a firm foundation upon which to shape their life’s work. To the incoming executive —all my good wishes and fervent hopes that child welfare will be your aims.

The president pointed out that various other sums had been handled during the year by the association and passed over to the School Committee, the total being in the vicinity of £BO.

The gratitude and appreciation of Mr Day and his staff were tendered to the association for the efforts .put forward by them, so willingly and ably, for the welfare of the children and the cause of education. Election of Officers

The following committee was elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs S. Wheeler; vice-president, Mrs R. Jensen; secretary, C. Gleadow; commi'lee, Mesdames W. Morrison, L. J. Drake, W. Woofe, Sherry, G. A. Gamble and Whisker.

The meeting closed at 3.45 p.m., after which a delicious afternoon tea was served by the committee.
