ONE BIG EFFORT

HOUSE-TO-HOUSE DRIVE

CANVASS ON A SATURDAY PAEROA’S PATRIOTIC QUOTA A scheme to make an intensive house-to-house canvass of the whole of the Paeroa borough area on a Saturday afternoon in the near future in an attempt to raise the whole of the- 1943 All

Purposes Appeal quota allotted to the town this year, £l2OO, was approved on Monday night at a meeting of the Paeroa District Patriotic Committee at which re-

presentatives of most of the leading sports and social organisations attended and a small committee was set up to attend to the necessary arrangements for the drive.

The Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, who presided, expressed the appreciation of the committee at the manner in which the various organisations had responded to the invitation for representatives of their clubs etc. to attend the meeting, explaining that the meeting had been called for the (purpose of discussing . ways and means of raising the £l2OO .allocated to the borough of Paeroa this year as its quota for the 1943 All Purposes Appeal. House To House Best The committee, he added, was of the opinion that a direct house-to-house canvass gave the best results, giving an instance of another town a little smaller than Paeroa. which had raised £3400 in one week recently by means of an intensive drive ending on a Saturday afternoon. If every person in Paeroa gave at an average of between 10s and 15s the quota would be achieved, explained the. Mayor. He touched upon the -benefit of one intensive effort, pointing out that it meant less effort and was easier for the workers than an appeal spread 'out throughout the year. If the various organisations would fall in witli- the idea and their members assist in the canvass on a suitable Saturday to be arranged he said he was sure a big portion of the qilota could be raised, if not the lot, by such means. . Mr A. Whiting, representing the Paeroa Labour Party, pointed ouo that people these days had a constant call on their pursb and' many were unable to afford to give much. He favoured a big gala sports day on the Paeroa Domain. In his opinion such a function would raise £lOOO easily.

Well Supported

Mrs S. Wheeler (Paeroa 'Parents’ Association) said that while she was sure a gala day would, be enjoyed by all, a house-to-house canvass was the only means of collecting from everybody as many people would not turn out for a sports day. She considered the scheme an excellent idea and was sure her association would rally round and assist. Mr C. C. Webb (Paeroa Bowling Club) said that his club would willingly support the idea. L Mr D. G. McMillan spoke in support of the scheme, a one-day effort in his opinion being an excellent idea. Mr J. M. Craig (Paeroa-Hauraki R.S.A.) said his association would also co-operate in the scheme. Mrs W. Barclay (Paeroa Croquet Club) said that she thought. that when the members of her club heard of the idea of the scheme they would assist, especially if the day was well advertised and each collector was given only a small area. Mr C. A. Pryor (Paeroa Caledonian Society) said that members of his organisation did not think, as an organisation, they could ask members to do any collecting but the society would assist in other ways, intimating that a cheque for £lO would be sent in to the Paeroa District Patriotic Committee in a day or so.

Approved Unanimously Mrs J. Hill (Paeroa Women’s Institute) said that some Institute members had already offered to help and she was sure others would be willing to assist also when they knew details of the scheme. Mr W. Townley (All Services Club) said that his club would help in some manner. Mr Whiting (Paeroa Labour Party) said his organisation would co-oper-ate and he would secure the names of those willing to collect. Mr Huhu Tukukino (Ngati Tamatere Hapu Committee) said his people were 100 per cent, 'behind the idea and would assist in the collecting. A resolution that cn a day to be arranged a concentrated house-to-house canvass be made in the borough of Paeroa to raise the quota required for the 1943 All Purposes Appeal was then put to the meeting and carried unanimously.

Representatives of the various organisations promised to hand in

lists of collectors before Monday, April 12. A committee comprising th? Mayoress, Mrs Edwin Edwards, Mrs S. Wheeler, Miss V. Menzies, the Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards and Messrs R. L. Darley,'D. Prime and A. A. Jenkinson was appointed to allocate areas to the various canvassers. After a little discussion it wasagreed that canvassers call in pairs.
