APPEALS HEARD

EMPLOYEES ATWAIHIMINE NOT TO LEAVE COMPANY DECISION OF THE COMMITTEE A sitting of the Industrial ManPower Appeal Committee was held at the Courthouse, Waihi, on Thursday, April 1, when two appeals against decisions of the Man-power Officer were considered. The chairman, Mr J. Liddell,- presided, and associated with, him were Messrs W. J. Truscott, K. Simpson and the secretary, Mr J. H. Clouston. In the first case, C. R. Brooks, a youth employed by the Martha Gold Mining Company, appealed against the decision of the Man-power Officer’ refusing him permission to terminate his employment with the company on the grounds of rate of wages and effect of the work in the mine on his health.

It was shown that he was earning approximately £6 per week and no ■evidence could be produced that the work was affecting his health.

Timber Cutting Contract

A. G. Spalding, a miner, employed' by the Martha Gold Mining Company, appealed against the decision of the Man-power Officer refusing him permission to terminate his employment to undertake a timber cutting contract. Mr H. .L. Boughton appeared for the appellant. Spalding had been engaged in mining for approximately 10 years but had also had over three years’ bush and mill experience. He had been engaged in mining continuously since 193'8 and had desired a change of occupation for some tiipe. He had been offered a timber cutting contract which would last approximately Three years and considered that this' was also essential work.

Mine Position Serious

The mine superintendent, Mr A. F. Lowrie, stated that the labour position at the mine - was serious and that they were approximately 100 below full strength. While he knew that Spalding was an experienced axeman, he also considered him one of his best miners and he would be a most difficult man to replace.
