LAWN TENNIS

PAEROA CLUB’S POSITION

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

OFFICERS FOR ENSUING YEAR

The nineteenth annual meeting of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club was held last Thursday evening, Mr G. Taylor presiding over a small attendance of members.

The annual report disclosed a satisfactory financial position and that a reduction of £25 had been made in the bank overdraft limit.

Mr H. R. Thorp, in moving the adoption of , the report, reminded members that the present healthy financial position had only been possible by the voluntary labour used in cutting and marking the courts. Mr Thorp briefly traced the history of the club, stating that up to about five years ago it had been customary to engage labour for the maintenance of the courts. This had cost the club about £3O a year, and when labour became unprocurable except at high rates of pay, th club adopted the present policy of doing the work by voluntary labour with considerable financial benefit.

The ball position was discussed at some length as indications showed that the supplies available to the 'dub were only meagre and the strictest economy would l be necessary in the use of balls, while a rationing scheme would also be necessary to -ensure that a fair and equitable distribution of available supplies was made. It was decided to seek further information regarding the ball position from the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association.

Affiliation Question

Mr E. H. Bartley expressed the

■opinion that in view of the cancella-

tion of all matches owing to wari time circumstances clubs should not be expected to pay full affiliation -fees to the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association. Last season the petrol restrictions had very considerably curtailed the playing of inter-club matches hut this coming season the position had been aggravated by a ball shortage, so that it was practically impossible for any inter-club matches to be held. Clubs would be for the time being out of touch with each other and members would be restricted to playing among themselves, so that the advantages usually accruing from affiliation with other

clubs would for the present be nonexistent and certainly would not

warrant the payment of full affiliation fees.

Jt was finally decided to write to the Thames Valley Association along these lines and suggest that fees be remitted either in whole or part of

the fees during the coming season. It was decided to officially open the season on Saturday next, October 24.

The election of officers resulted as under:- Patron, Mr Wm. Marshall;

president, Mr G. Taylor; vice-presi-dent, Mr J. J. Hill; secretary and treasurer, Mrs C. T. Handley; club captain, Mr H. R. Thorp; committee, Messrs E.’Lee, Boyd, A. F. Thorp, B. Hunt, Dr. F. L. Clark, Miss R. Dickson, Mrs Boyd and Mrs G. Bain; hon. auditor, Mr J. H. Bartlett; delegates to Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association, Mrs C. T. Handley, Messrs G. Taylor, J. IJill and H. Thorp.
