SPORTS AT NGATEA
SUCCESSFUL GALA DAY PATRIOTIC FUNDS AIDED SOLDIERS’ CHRISTMAS PARCELS A very successful gala sports day organised by the Hopai Basketbail Club and the Ngatea Scout Troop was held on Saturday, October 10, in the Ngatea District High School grounds. The function was assisted by the Ngatea Patriotic Committee and the money raised went to augment the Soldiers’ Christmas Parcels Fund. Although much rain had fallen during the two previous days, Saturday was a beautiful day and a full programme under the directions of Mr D. Waite and Captain V. C. Bunce, C.A., was carried out. Lunch could be bought on the grounds and a bringandnbuy stall also proved a great success. The main attractions were a burlesque basketball match, consisting of a young men’s team dressed in gym dresses who played the Hopai and Ngatea girls. The match ended in a win for the girls, 10 points to 4.
Home Guard Rugby The football match, Ngatea Hopie Guard versus Kaihere and Patetonga Home Guard proved a very exciting game and ended in a close decision for Ngatea, the score being 9-8. The following were the results of the events of the day. Basketball. —Hopai Girls 3 v. Scouts A, 0; Junior Girls 4 v. Scouts B 0; Ngatea 9' v. Hopai 8. Football. —'Cubs 0 v. School 9; Scouts 0 v. School 8; Scouts A' 17 v. Scouts B 0. Athletic Events Girls, 50yds., age 7-9.—'Pam Penman and Joyce McCollum, dead heat, 1 Boys.—Jack Turner 1, Lloyd Thomas 2. Girls, 50yds., age 9-11.—Peggy O’Brien 1, Betty Turner 2. Boys, 100yds.—Robert Bright 1, Selwyn Dalgety 2. Boys, 100yds., age 11-13.—Edward Waite 1, Desmond Wallis 2. Girls, 100yds., age 13-15.—Francis Waite 1, Melvis Parry 2. Boys.—Wyn Speedy 1, Terence Leonard 2. Relay race. —Ngatea girls 1, Hopai Girls 1, Scouts 3. Tug-’o-war.—Scouts B 2, Scouts A nil. The officials were as under: — Judges: Mr S. Phelps and Mr D. Waite. Results: Miss L. Durrad. Starter, Mr Hunt. Basketball referee: Miss Benge. Football referee: Captain V. C. ’Bunce, C.A.
The ladies in charge of the stalls included Mesdames Sydenham, W. Flint, E. R. 0. Sherlock, S. Phelps,. Skipper, J. Motion, W. Lawrence, G. Garner, H. sVaite, C. Brown. At the close of the afternoon’s programme Mr 'C. W. Schultz, chairman of the Ngatea .Patriotic Committee thanked all who had helped, in arranging the day and asked the public to show their appreciation in the usual manner.
