EXCESSIVE FARE

TAXI PROPRIETOR IN COURT CHARGED 7/6 FOR 4/6 TREP John Henry Corbett, taxi proprietor, of Thames, was fined £2 and ordered to pay court costs for charging excessive taxi fares by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Thames Police Court on Tuesday. Corbett was also fined 10s and ordered*’ to pay court costs for putting an unlicensed taxi on the road. Traffic Inspector W. Wilson stated that the accused drove miners to the Sylvia Mine at Tararu. Both -parties had agreed upon a fare of ss. Then the fare was- put up to 7s 6d. The mine was four miles from the Thames Post Office, and the regulation fare was 4s 6d. Accused had charged another party only 4s to travel the same distance.
