MATRONS TO CONFER

PROBLEMS OF NURSING NORTHEDN AREA NORTH ISLAND Regional conferences of hospital matrons are being held in New Zealand, according to information received yesterday by the Thames Hospital Board from the Director-General of Health. These regional conferences would be convened by the Director of Nursing, Miss Lambic. The first had already taken place at Palmerston North and another is to be held in Auckland on August 26, attended by hospital matrons from the northern portion of the North Island. Matters to bo discussed at the conference included recruitment of pupil nurses, the regulations governing nursing as an essential industry, rationing of uniform, teaching of anatomy' and physiology', the Students’ Nurses’ Association, standard technique in emergency hospitals, nursing The latter subject was subdivided on the agenda into three topics—registered nurses, voluntary aids, relationship of hospital and local E.P.S. staffing. Special aspects of the consideration given the voluntary' aid problem would include an increase in numbers, their better use, their salaries and travelling expenses, and obstetric aids. The Director-General of Health concluded by requesting that the matrons of both Thames and Waihi Hospitals be permitted to attend the conference. The Board granted the required premission.
