SCHOOL AFFAIRS

COROMANDEL COMMITTEE

REPLACEMENT OF HAND BASIN

The monthly meeting of the Coromandel 'School Committee was presided over by the chairman, Mr E. W. Gilliver. There was a full attendance of merifbers, the headmaster being also in attendance.

Since the last meeting, a representative from this ward on the Board of Education, Mr A. N. Macky, had passed away during the counting of the votes, which would have meant his re-election. A letter of condolence is to be forwarded to Mrs Macky.

Two requests arising out of the last meeting met with adverse replies. In the first the Coromandel County Council stated that its bylaws precluded it from granting any concession regarding the water rates, and in the second the board stated that the glazing of the windows was the responsibility of the committee.

A letter is to be forwarded to the board’s architect asking that he recommend the replacement of the present hand-basins by installing modern toilet facilities. It was considered by the committee that these facilities at present in use are both unsightly and insanitary, and further that any new fixtures could be utilised in any new construction decided upon. The board is to.be asked fox* authority to erect a fence to make the horse paddock secure. A number of accounts were presented and passed for payment. >
