HAPPY COINCIDENCE

TWOHILL MEMORIAL TROPHY

WON BY FORMER APPRENTICE

A particularly suitable coincidence was mentioned by the president of the Thames Jockey Club, Mr W. Bongard, when he introduced the owners of the winners of the two big races at IPaeroa on Saturday to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, for presentation of trophies to them by the Minister. The coincidence mentioned by Mr Bongard dealt with the fact that Mi’ R. H. Martin, now of Matamata but formerly of Thames, who owns and trains Ureklaw, winner of the Thames Handicap Steeplechase, was the first recipient of the James Twohill Memorial Trophy, donated, by the licensed victuallers of Thames. Mr Bongard reminded the gathering that Mr Martin had, most appropriately, been apprenticed to the late Mr Twohill many years, ago, and that this association, he said, was a most happy coincidence. Mr Bongard also introduced Mr G. Newsham, of Orongo, owner of Airport, the President’s Handicap winner.

Tribute was paid by Mr Bongard to the. services of Mr 'C. Motion, a member of the Auckland District Racing Committee and of the New Zealand Racing Conference. Mr Bongard congratulated him on his recent election to the vice-presidency of the Conference, also for his services to country racing clubs. Mr Bongard also had a word of thanks for the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for its having made, the Paeroa course available to the Thames club.
