“ONLY TRUE BASIS ”

DAIRY FARMERS’ RETURNS PER ACRE PRODUCTION Claiming that it vitally concerned the basis of. the guaranteed price in that over a period of years there had been a mistaken boosting of returns per cow, Mr F. H. Anderson drew : attention to an important matter at the annual meeting of. the Cambridge Dairy Company recently.

Mr Anderson said that for years the Agricultural Department had been compiling statistics on the per cow basis, and he contended that this was acting on the industry, detrimentally. . - The following resolution, moved.by Mr Anderson, and seconded by Mr W. C. Wallace, was carried unanimously:— That this meeting is of opinion: (1) That dairy farmers’ returns were falsely stated when the average production' per cow was taken in 1938. (2) That the returns called for annually by the Herd Improvement Association, in conjunction with the Dairy Board as to the number of cows milked at January 15 are of .no true value as correct records of dairy farm production, inasmuch that the number of cows does not include cows wintered (at consideiable cost), milked ‘ for a period and discarded before January 15.

(3) That in the ultimate the only true basis of dairy farmers’ returns is the per acre production of butterfat.”

•Copies of the resolution will be sent to the Dairy Industry Council and the Herd Improvement Association.
