MUST WIN THIS WAR

MAY BE A LONG STRUGGLE COULD COLLAPSE SUDDENLY The United Nations have to win this war if the world is not “to come to an end,” Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, for 4'l years president of Columbia University, said in an interview on his 80th. birthday. “In view of the dogmatic determination of the Nazis and the Japanese to carry out their plans of domination, and in view of their long years of preparation for war, despite their pledges of peace, and because the democracies, taking them at their word, were not arming themselves, it may be several years before the war is over,” Dr. Butler asserted. “But, on the other hand, a collapse might come with startling suddenness, from economic causes—meaning the falling-off of food‘supplies, in Europe particularly.”

Asked if he contemplated, even remotely, the prospect of resigning his presidency of -the university, Dr. Butler replied: “Not until I die—the reason being if I did resign I would die right off. The 40-hour week has no charm for me. I’m looking for a 40-hour day. My work isn’t finished. Age and years have nothing to do with each other. One of the youngest men I ever knew was Gladstone when he was over 80.” Dr. Butler said, that he expected, after the war, not dictatorship or socialism, or communism in the U.S.A., hut a continuation of the demoncratic way of life, with realigned political parties. This change in the “not too distant future,” he said, would make the parties, “correspondent with the facts,” which he held, the old parties do not. —New York Times.
