FORTY YEARS AGO

FROM THE BOER WAR OHINEMURI ELECTORATE MR HUGH POLAND TQ CONTEST (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of July 29, 1902.) Amongst the names of those of the Eighth Contingent who have returned, from the war in the troopship Britannic, we notice the following:—Thames Troopers: J. iSomerville, C. Bowler, C. Gibbons, J. Graham, C. Griffiths, R. H. Keating, W. J. 0. Moore, M. H. Ryan, E. M. Rea, W. J. ’’Taylor, J. S. Taylor, A. H. Watts, J. H. Walsh. Paeroa: S. T. Silcock. •Speaking as one of the deputation who waited on Sir Joseph Ward (Minister for Railways) in' regard to the promulgation of the North Island Trunk Railway, Mr Jackson Palmer, member for this district, thought the Government should put a sufficient sum on the estimates in order to allow the line to be pushed on* at a rapid rate. He did not think the present loan proposals were enough for the purpose. In to-day’s issue Mr Hugh Poland announces that he will be a candidate to contest the seat of the Ohinemuri Electorate at the forthcoming election. Mr Poland has been a resident of the district for a great number of years, and the popular agent of the Auckland Star and Graphic, and was last year elected chairman <of the County Council, and should certainly know the wants of the district. >
