SHILLING NOTES

SHORTAGE OF SILVER FIJI GOVERNMENT ISSUE SOME RECEIVED IN PAEROA A shortage of silver coinage in Fiji has led to the issue, as legal tender by the Government of Fiji, of paper money for silver. Some of the one shilling notes have' been received in Faeroa. They are on special paper, signed by the Commissioners of Currency. The notes are about four and a-half inches by three inches and they are

legal tender for payment of any amount not exceeding £2. The New Zealand Press Association’s special Australian correspon-

dent says that the return from overseas of large numbers of the A.I.F. and the .influx of American troops is blamed for the acute shortage of silver and copper coins. In the past year the Commonwealth mint lias issued £1,500,000 worth of silver coins and £60,000 worth of coppers. The mint is now working 60 hours a week turning out silver coins only.
