MEN OF “SIXTH COLUMN”

UNWITTINGLY DISLOYAL

RUMOUR AND CARELESS TALK

What President Roosevelt described a few months ago as a “Sixth Column!” —the man (or woman) who, by not keeping a check on his tongue, unwittingly spreads rumour and* careless talk, to the detriment of our own cause and . the assistance of the enemy’s, is aptly summed up in the following verses from the “Westrajian Worker”:— “They’re shifting troops from Y to Z, They’re shipping tanks from A to»» Y, And up at P and Q,” he said, “Militiamen are standing by. There’s been some fighting off the coast, The S — and R— have both gone down; Some of the men were saved, but most Of those on board were left to drown. “They’ve bombed the aerodrome at B— Our fighting planes got there too late; - The town is burning, and at C They’re ready to evacuate. I just saw Captain J—, and he Says things are going any way; He’s going with the troops to E— The convoy leaves on Saturday.” So does he prattle, he who strives To seem the wisest in the street, Not caring whether human lives Shall be the cost of his conceit. So does he tattle without pause To find if it be false or true, Or weigh the harm that he might cause, Or gauge the damage he might do. Oh, strong and ever-flapping tongue, Oh, weak and ever-wagging chin, Yours is the foremost place among Those who would help the foe to win. Unruled by thought, and without rest, You labour on by day and night— Two of the busiest and best Of Hitler’s allies in the fight.
