OPENING UP LAND

INDIVIDUALISM BEST PLEA BY MR SUTHERLAND GREAT WORK OF PIONEERS Speaking during the Lands for Settlement Account debate in the House of Representatives’ recently, Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki., said that during recent years, development of land in New Zealand had not been done satisfactorily. He knew it was difficult to economically develop land to-day. While it was counted a crime to-day to mention rugged individualism., he thought the great work of our pioneers had amply demonstrated that there was still room for the rugged individualist in land development. Therefore he would make a plea that the department, when opening up virgin land, should leave a portion. to be developed 'by the settler. The developing of land was very interesting work and private... settlers would always do the work more economically .than the State.

Land development in the Dominion was at a standstill to-day, but in view of the number of returned men who would 'be looking for land, the department should push on with land development at the earliest possible date. .
