VERY NARROW ESCAPE PAEROA SCHOOL AFFAIRS SCRIPTURAL LESSONS OPPOSED ('From the Ohinemuri Gazette of July 1, 1902.) The driver of one of 'Mr Laurie’s drays at Waihi had a very narrow escape from a serious accident yesterday. He was sitting on the dray, which was loaded with metal and driving down the hill from the Waihi iCompany’s No. 2 shaft tip head when the axle collapsed and the driver by a quick movement narrowly escaped ‘being .pinned down under the heavy dray. At the meeting of the Auckland Education Board on Wednesday, a letter was received from the - Rev. Belton, of Paeroa, stating that he was desirous of giving scriptural lessons in the Paeroa school after the regular school hours, but the committee had declined to grant the request. He asked the board to give a ruling as to‘the legality of the committee’s decision. The chairman said it was customary to grant such applications and it was decided to advise the committee to that effect. The wind 'blew a regular hurricane in Te Aroha throughout Friday last and at times it was feared some of the buildings and verandahs would be taking an aerial flight. During the progress ' of the gale, a sheet of galvanised iron was carried across the street opposite the 'Palace Hotel, with lightning speed.
