RACING NEWS & NOTES
Wellington Races The entries ,for the Wellington Racing Club*s winter meeting, to be held at Trentham on July 4 and 11, number 573. They range up to the fifties in a few of the races 1 , but in two or three only is there a risk of the safety number being exceeded when acceptances are taken. New Barrier
For some time the installation of a new type of starting barrier has been under consideration for the Trentham racecourse. The Henry barrier, which is used at Ellerslie and Awapuni, is to be tried at the mile post at the July meeting. It is said to be much faster in clearance than the existing barrier, which is l inclined to balloon in the middle.
A Classic Type One of the most attractive performances at the Hawke’s Bay meeting was Boulder 'Dam’s win in the maiden event. Though it was only novice company opposed to him, there was much to admire in the way he made up his ground and won going away. He is a stylish looking colt, a resolute galloper, and a potential stayer, the type likely to develop into a classic performer. Shows Promise
P. Burgess gave the Musketoon two-year-old Flahuluk his first race at Hastings, and he showed much promise by running on nicely at the finish to fill fourth place. It was an encouraging effort from an inexperienced youngster in a big field. Flahuluk carries the same colours as Dalesman, who was a winner among the juveniles in the spring. Very Green
Home Rule, who led the maiden field at Hastings to the straight, is a two-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Tipperary Girl, and is raced by The Champ’s owner. Home Rule lacked experience, and hung out on the turn, but he revealed a nice turn of speed, and should do better with more experience. He is a well-grown youngster and has the scope to make up into a useful horse. Well Ridden
Horsemanship had a good deal to do with the two wins scored by Mr T. H. Lowry’s horses, Boulder Dam and Vin d’Honneur, at Hastings. Both were ridden by Broughton, but he could not induce Lam'bourn to put his best foot forward in the main handicap until it was too late. Lost Chance at Start
Renarde, a stablemate of Atreus, who won the Winter Handicap earlier in the day, was well backed for the Rotopai Handicap at Hastings, but
she failed to get away smartly. She was used up a good deal along the back straight to try and recover lost ground, but she was never in a good position.
A Casualty Siegall was very lame after running third in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, and she can be counted out for some time.
Out to Spell Racing has lightened Soutane’s condition, and after 'Saturday’s race at Hastings her owner decided to spell her for the remainder of the season.
Improving Form If Yogi maintains his present rate of progress he should soon be returned the winner of a middle distance handicap, He finished solidly in the
Hastings Winter Handicap to get second money and appeared a fresh horse after the race. Made the Grade Duality’s showing in his first start in open company in the Final Handicap at Hastings revealed that he is going to make good among the sprinter’s. The fortunes of the running went against him, and had he secured the opening which went in Eixpellant’s favour Duality probably would have won. It was a good performance for a hack. Career Finished J. M. Paul stated on Saturday that there was- little likelihood of that former class printer Sunny Knight racing again. Earlier in the season Sunny Knight broke a small bone in a joint and the injury has not yielded to treatment.
