SUCCESSFUL YEAR

PAEROA BOWLING CLUB REVIEW OF THE SEASON PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT Brother Bowlers, In presenting to' you the 38th. annual report and 'balance sheet, your committee has pleasure in reporting ■one of the most successful and enjoyable seasons the club has experienced, due principally to a large increase in membership, and to the fact that only one playing Saturday was lost on account of the weather, states the annual report of the Paeroa Bowling Club to be presented by the president, Mr W. Morrison, at the annual meeting on Wednesday night. The report continues: — The official opening was held in perfect weather on October 18, and we were favoured with a large attendance of visiting bowlers and friends, who spent an enjoyable afternoon with us.

We thank the Paerda Municipal Band for its attendance on this day.

Finance.— The club’s finance is in a very healthy state, due to increased 'membership and to the able management of the treasurer, Mr 'Geo. Stewart and the secretary, Mr T. Fye. We would like to draw the attention of members to the necessity for ■every care being exercised in con■serving our finance during the difficult times we are now experiencing, and which must shortly show its effect on our membership.

‘ The Green.— The green, which is now practically covered with water weed, has improved 100% under careful management of Mr T. L. Williams, green superintendent, and Mr T. Vincent, the greenkeeper. Both of these members have given more than their ;share of time to our green, and the results will be noticed in the coming season.

Our thanks are due to these two members particularly, and to other members who have willingly assisted during the season, ’ South Auckland Centre. —As no meeting of the Centre has been held this year your delegates have no report to make, Goldfiield Association.— The annual meeting was held in our pavilion and was attended by the club’s delegates, Messrs Geo. Stewart and T. W. Pye. Clothier Shield.— Two teams journeyed to Te Aroha, and the team consisting of C. Smith, W. E. Westlake, .J, McAnally and Skipped by T. L. “Williams, brought the shield back to' Paeroa. Congratulations to this .team. Goldfields Stars.— These were won .by the same team, who defeated all ■ challengers throughout the season. 'This team played consistently and Thoroughly deserves the honour of the Stars. Fraser Star's. — Messrs Webb and 'Morrison were successful in uplifting these stars from Waihi, and held them until the final challenge, when they were lost' to Waihi in a closely .fought-out game. Club Competitions All competitions were well contested and under the two-life system, games were got off to date and some good bowling resulted. Club Champion.—T. L. Williams. B Grade Champion.—H. W. McGregor. This member played consistent, bowls throughout the season and deserved his win. Handicap Pairs.—H. W. McGregor, W. Morrison (skip). Brenan Shield.— C. Waines, A. Vowles, E. W. Chisholm, W. Club Fours.— On account of benzine ■restrictions we had a number of Saturdays vacant and the president donated a set of silver buttons for this competition, to be played under the same conditions as the President’s Fours, with the exception that skips lead and leads skip. Some very interesting bowling resulted, the winning team being Messrs C. T. Smith, P. H. Leigh, Geo. Stewart and T. Vincent (skip)'. Handicap singles.— E. W. Chisholm. First-year Champion. — Gordon Stewart. This new player played -good bowls throughout the year, and •• was runner-up in the, B grade and Handicap Singles competitions also. Donations.—We thank the undermentioned gentlemen for donations as under: Mr Pat. O’Neill, first-year trophy; Mr E. P. Fathers, £1 Is for Mr W. H. Taylor, £1; Rev. Harrison, ss; and Mr E. Faulkner,

Ladies’ Day.— 'This proved quite a success, and ladies and brother ‘bowlers had an enjoyable afternoon. Thanks.—To the Hauraki Plains Gazette for the continued interest it has shown in our club activities, and to the wives of members and members of the Croquet Club who cared for afternoon tea arrangements on special occasions, we tender our appreciation and thanks. Mrs Sheriff, who relinquished her afternoon tea duties, was the recipient of a suitable presentation from the bowlers, in appreciation of her services to the club, covering a period of twenty years. Mrs Scott has taken over the afternoon tea duties, and is giving very satisfactory service.

To the Domain Board for assistance and co-operation on all occasions we are indebted.

The selector, Mr Gibb, came through with flying colours, our Club holding every trophy for competition in the Goldfiields, with the exception of the Fraser Stars.

To Mr Pye, the successful season speaks for itself, and his untiring work and. organisation is not known to most members until they have worked with him in an executive capacity.

In conclusion I desire to personally thank the vice-presidents for acting in my stead on the days I was unable to attend on account of duty. To the match committee for the successful manner in which the competitions were conducted, and to the many others Who assisted me without question throughout the season, I tender my sincere thanks and appreciation.
