PROPORTION OF PLAINS RATES EXPLANATION BY THE CLERK In explaining the statement of receipts and. expenditure at the monthly meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council, the clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, said that out of the general rate struck, amounting to £16,570', the hospital levy was £4676, and amount of interest £2400, making over £7OOO, accounting for about 2d of the 4'ld general rate. “I give these figures, Mr Chairman,” said the clerk, “to dispose of the impression that many ratepayers appear to have, that all money received from rates is spent on roads and repairs.”
