A FINE PARADE

MARCH TO THE CENOTAPH TRIBUTE PAID IN FLOWERS ORDER OF THE CEREMONY The parade, under the command of Major J. H, Bartlett, formed up. at the Post -Office and in good time marched off, led by'the returned soldiers and followed by the Home Guard, Paeroa Municipal Band, Women’s War Service Auxiliary, St. John Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides in that order marching via Normaniby road, through Arney street entrance to the Cenotaph on Primrose Hill. The official party consisting of the Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards,, the chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, Mr W. Marshall, Major G. B. Murray, Messrs H. M. Shand, C. C. Webb, J. .Walmsley,. E. S. Moore, R. S. Nicol, Rev. J. R. Nelson and Major T. R. .Moore (Salvation Army) ! , took the salute as the parade passed, the Paeroa Borough Chambers.

At Primrose Hill the parade formed a hollow square facing the Cenotaph which was guarded by four soldiers. The service opened with the singing of the National Anthem led by the. Paeroa Municipal Band after which the Mayor and Mr J. Walmsley placed wreaths on the. Cenotaph. Other wreaths were placed by members of the official party and the organisations represented in the parade followed by tributes from the school children and. the general public. A wreath was placed on the Bradford Memorial for, veterans of the South African War by Messrs P. R. Hubbard, A. E. Day, T. Fulton and B. E. Veale.

A hymn, “O God Our Help In Ages Past,” was sung, followed by a prayer offered by Major T. R. Moore and a scripture reading by Rev. J. R. Nelson.

An inspiring address was delivered •by the Mayor, being followed by a hymn, “O Valiant Hearts.”

The “Last Post” was sounded by the bandmaster, Mr E. Beilby during which the flags on the Cenotaph were lowered, followed by one minute’s silence and the “Reveille” when the flags were hoisted again. The parade was then marched away from the Cenotaph and dismissed by Major Bartlett.
