WOMEN REPLACE MEN
MANY JOBS IN AUSTRALIA INCREASE IN RECENT MONTHS Women are/ replacing mon in dozens of spheres in Australia because of the shortage of male labour caused by enlistments in the A.I.F. and call-ups foi - home defence. For more than two years, women have gradually been taking the place of men on farms and pastoral properties, but in the last two months they have entered many new fields. Type-
writer repairs are now being done by women in Brisbane, and a gang of girls lias been organised to tape shop windows as a. protection against air raids. A girl radio technician is now attached to the staff of one of the broadcasting stations, probably the first girl so employed in Australia. Others have been engaged by fire brigades to inspect and test street alarm systems and automatic installations.
