FORTY YEARS AGO

“IN MEMORIAM” SERVICES

DEATH OF THE QUEEN KARANGAHAKE SERVICE (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of March 31, 1901.) In accordance with the wishes of the New Zealand Government to hold “In Memoriam” services in the churches throughout the colony, commemorating the death of the Queen, a service of a unique character was conducted in the Karangahake Wesleyan 'Church on Sunday evening last by the Rev. W. Greenslade. The local brass band, under Conductor Robinson, attended the service and paid a tribute of respect to their departed sovereign by impressively rendering the “Dead March in Saul.” The building ■was taxed to its utmost capacity and many were unable to gain admission. Emblems of mourning draped the pulpit, around which floral wreaths were tastefully arranged. The preacher took his text from Revelations, 14tlj. Chapter, 13th. verse, “Her words follow her.” He referred, to the profound national sorrow which was being evinced by millions of the earth’s inhabitants at the death of Queen Victoria. He briefly narrated the principal events of the reign, emphasising the acknowledgment of Divine Supremacy and the devotion of her people which had characterised her whole private and public life. During' her magnificent reign the 'British people had witnessed the growth, expansion and solidarity of the Empire, and they possessed the heritage of her illustrious example. He hoped those present would, learn l important lessons from her exemplary conduct, and they would exhibit similar practical sympathy toward the distressed and suffering, the same patience and perseverance in doing right. Obedience to duty, a high standard of moral perfection, and a trustful submission to Divine control and. direction.
