APPEAL FOR BOOKS

READING FOR SOLDIERS NEED FOR PERIODICALS PUBLIC ASKED TO ASSIST . An appeal for books and periodicals for the men in the fighting forces in New Zealand and overseas has been received by the Paeroa Public Library from the Country Library Service which is handling this matter.

They state that nearly 200,000 books and periodicals have already been issued to the fighting services both in New Zealand and overseas and the work of the Library Service is increasing because of a greater range of needs must be met and they appeal for'public help in the matter. Quality Rather Than Quantity

“The supply of War Library Service books continues to.be adequate as regards quantity but inadequate as regards quality,” states the letter from the Country Library Service, adding:—

“Therefore if you could stress this ‘quality’ aspect when collecting, you might help to solve a problem. A few books by modern authors —Bromfield, Buchan, Rachel Field, Gunther, Richard Llewellyn, Margaret Mitchell, Morley, Douglas Reed, Howard Spring, Steinbeck, Otto Strasser, Norn Wain —are now more acceptable l than many > times their number of lesser works. Periodicals Needed

“On the other hand periodicals of all popular and useful types are urgently needed. X Anybody desiring to donate books or periodicals may leave same at the Paeroa Public Library or the Paeroa Borough Council Office.
