NETHERTON PATRIOTIC EFFORT FUNCTION HELD LAST WEEK A very enjoyable and successful evening was held in the Netherton Hall on Thursday night last, the proceeds being in aid of the patriotic funds.
The evening opened, with pupils of the Netherton School singing five songs, the titles being, “Ye Mariners of England,” “Land of Our Fathers,” “Rule Britannia,” “Wings Over The Navy.” Miss D. Fisher and Master G. Townshend sang solos assisted by other pupils in the chorus, “There’ll Always Be An England.” The children then gave items in folk dancing’, which wa's very much appreciated by the audience. A recitation was given by Miss D. Fisher, entitler “Poor Mrs Somebody.” A humorous sketch was given by Master G. Townshend, as Hitler, and Master D. Andrews as Mr Churchill. During the evening raffles in aid of patriotic funds were drawn and resulted as follows:—
Christmas hamper.—Won by Mr B A. Carter, of Netherton. Travelling rug.—Won by Mr L. G Sunde, c/o. Hayward, of Netherton. Roll of Bacon.—Won by Mr B. A Carter, of Netherton.
Baby’s outfit. —Won by Miss Rub?/ Fisher, of Netherton.
Mr J. A. Reid thein spoke stating that they had done very well in these raffles, the amount collected being £26 19s. With a donation of £lO from the Netherton School, the evening’s door cakings, and the raffles, the total
amount raised was £47. Mr P. Harold, who has been chair-
man of the Netherton School Com-
mittee for many years and is now going to New Guinea to make his residence, was presented with a suitcase and. a travellingk rug from the Netherton School Committee. The presentation was made by Mr C. Stembridge.
On behalf of the parents of the school children, Mr A. S. Fisher presented Mr Harold with a wallet.
Mr Harold replied stating that he appreciated the presents very much, adding that he hoped to be leaving for New Guinea early in February.
Mr C. Townshend on behalf of the Patriotic Committee presented Mrs R. Wemyss with a brush and comb for her kindness in supplying the music at all the patriotic evenings.
Supper was served and dancing was enjoyed by adults. Excellent music was supplied by Mrs R. Wemyss.
