TOLL GATES LINGER

Seven toll gates, reputed to be the oldest in Britain, are situated within a mile or two of the heart of Manchester. Housed on the Victoria Park estate, they still impose a levy on passing motorists, and raised no less than £1039 in 1936, compared with £2O in 1847. Manchester Corporation has now come to an agreement with the trustees of the estate to free Anson Road, the main thoroughfare, from toll. The Corporation is to pay £ 800 a year as compensation. This expenditure is regarded as well worth while, as it will relieve congestion on other thoroughfares leading into the city. Tolls will still continue to be levied on other parts of the estate.
