Confidence Trick
The old “lost wallet” confidence trick has cost an elderly man from Cairns £450, representing practically all his life’s savings, and Sydney police (the Morning Herald says) are looking for the three men who are alleged to have duped the Queensland visitor. According to the report made to the police, a wallet containing some money was dropped and was found by the victim. A name and address were found in the wallet, and one of the confidence men suggested that it should be returned to the owner. The owner suggested an investment, and as a reward for the finder’s honesty, the victim was prevailed on to put in £450. He was then given his fare back to Queensland with the promise that his share of the investment, which would be double the amount he put in, would be sent on to him. The victim realised before he reached Cairns that he had been duped, and he returned to Sydney to make his complaint to the police.
