Thames Trots The Railway Department advertises in this issue particulars of cheap excursion fares and train arrangements in connection with the trotting meeting at Thames on November 5. Land Reserved Last week’s Gazette proclaims the permanent reservation of the following land in the Paeroa borough:— Paeroa Survey District, Section 13, Block VII., 3 acres 2 roods 11 perches, quarry; Sections .14, 16 and 17, 2 acres 2 roods 29 perches, buildings of the general government.

Carriers’ Meeting An urgent special meeting of the Thames Valley Cariers’ Association has been summoned for to-morrow evening in the Civic Hall, Paeroa, in connection with recent rumours concerning a possible strike of transport drivers, An invitation is extended to all interested parties to attend.

Chicken Stealing Foiled A visitor to a Paeroa residence recently was surprised to observe chained to a small kennel a large black cat with four kittens. “She eats the chickens,” explained the householder. The cat was tethered with a light chain attached to an elaborate collar.

Pedestrian Crossings Even school children are “wise” to the misuses of pedestrian crossings now. Yesterday one motorist in Paeroa noticed a small child waiting at a crossing. As soon as the car drew near to it the infant calmly sauntered across, keeping one wary eye on the motorist. Thames Racecourse

The Parawai racecourse, Thames, has been improved by the terracing of a grass bank in front of the main stand thus providing further seating accommodation for patrons. The course and track are in splendid order for the trotting meeting to be held on Saturday.

More Etymology Further light on the spelling and M pronunciation of Tarariki creek, near Paeroa, has been thrown by Mr C. Kenny, whose activity as a surveyor and long association with the district clothes his views with considerable weight. Mr. Kenny inclines to the opinion that the colloquial “Tackerry” is a corruption of “Thackeray,” the name given an old native who formerly lived near the creek.

Taniwha Leaking Discovered in Auckland yesterday to be in a leaking condition, the Northern Steamship Company’s passenger steamer Taniwha, which has been out of commission at moorings in Shoal was moved to shallower water as a precautionary measuse. The Taniwha, at one time a popular ’vessel for travellers to Paeroa, was seen by a passing steamer to have developed a pronounced list ■and in a position which might have become dangerous.
