EXCESS OF BARONETS
The official Roll of Baronets for 1937, just issued, contains 1566 names, and is, therefore, very much larger than it should be had the Crown kept the promise made when the first baronets were created in 1611 (says the Manchester Guardian). The new title was designed to aid the Exchequer, each recipient being expected to pay £2295 for the honour, but this payment was extorted on a strict understanding that the Order should be limited to .200, and that when the original baronetcies became extinct others should not be created in their room, thus ensuring greater distinction to those that remained. Had that promise been kept, baronets would be very rare indeed, for in only 10 of the original creations has the title been handed down to our day.
