WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAITAKARURU. Mrs N. Hedges presided over a large attendance of members and visitors at the recent monthly meeting of the Waitakaruru Women’s Institute. Mesdames Bromfield and Drake of the Maramarua institute, debated against Mesdames Wallace and Poland of Waitakaruru on the subject: “Husbands and wives should holiday together.” The Waitakaruru team was adjudged the winner by Mrs G. Hessel of Turua, who in the course of her remarks gave interesting and helpful criticism. The roll call, “What would you do if you were surprised by a burglar?” was the cause of much amusement. A clothes pegging competition requiring speed and energy was won by Mrs F. Stretton. Mrs Evans read for the motto of the month: “Life without friendship is like a day without sun.” Birthday posies were presented to Mesdames Simpson, Ganley, Lind and Humphries. The winners of the scone competition were: Mrs Death 1, Mrs Mitchell 2, Mrs Garland 3; while the best bloom was won by Mrs Paton, with Mrs Otter 2 and Mrs Cummings 3. Mrs Garland was adjudged the winner of the points prize for the year.
