When sticking down preserves, always mix a little mustard and cayenne pepper with the paste. • This keeps ants and mice away.
Line kitchen shelves with oil-baize. It saves the labour of renewing paper. A wipe with a damp cloth is all that is required.
Before using a new packet of tea, spread the tea on a sheet of brown paper in a warm, not too hot, oven, for ten minutes. It will go twice as far, and will have a better flavour.
When women carpenters are ready to begin work, they should fill a large bar of washing soap with nails of required size. They will then penetrate the hardest wood without bending, and they will not split the timber.
Dates and other dried fruits are greatly improved if placed in a warm oven for about ten minutes before serving. This frees the natural sugar and makes them ever so much more juicy.
To give green vegetables a brighter colour, use a good pinch of unusued tea leaves. Never use soda for this purpose, as it destroys the vitamins in vegetables.
