“Are men or women the best judges of tobacco ? ” queried the reporter. The tobacconist lit a cigarette. “Why, men, of course,” he said, “but some women know what’s what. When a man strikes a brand he likes it’s generally for keeps. Why one of my ‘regulars’ has been smoking Cut Plug No. 10 for twenty years, and another has been puffing Navy Cut No. 3 for nigh as long. Women aren’t like that as a rule. They’ll go for anything new, and a neat tin with a ‘pretty’ picture on the lid usually fetches them.” “Those brands you’ve named are ‘toasted,’ aren’t they?” “That’s right, and they’re about the pick of the basket if you ask me. They’re for the pipe, same as Cavendish (another fine brand). The other two toasted brands, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold are cigarette tobaccos, very popular with the roll-your-own brigade. We sell any quantity of all five brands. Hardly any nicotine in toasted, one .reason why it’s so popular.” The scribe “made a note of it” before he vanished. He’d got an “item.”
