PAEROA BOROUGH

USE OF THE DOMAIN APPLICATIONS GRANTED WORK IN DE CASTRO STREET. The Paeroa Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr Wm. Marshall, and Crs. E. Elwards, W. E. Ward, H. M. Shand and F. E. Flatt and the town clerk, Mr R. S. Nicol. Apologies for absence were received from Grs. H. J. Hare, P. E. Brenan, R. B. Dunlop and C. C. Webb. An application by the Paeroa Ladies’ Croquet Club for the use of the domain lawns this year was granted upon the same terms as previously, rent £25 to be paid by January 31, 1938. The council was unable to advise yet when the lawns could be used. At Cr. Edwards’ suggestion it was •agreed to repair the shelters round the lawns.

The Hauraki Agricultural and Pastoral Association was granted the use of the domain and the grandstand for the annual show on December 4 at rental of £l2 10s reducible to £lO 5s if paid by January 31, 1938. The transfer of a billiard room licence from T. Robertson to C. Goldfinch was granted. A dangerous goods licence was also transferred from C. J. Nielsen to L.' Henwood.

The Public Works Department advised that it had agreed to increase the annual maintenance of the Whaka-tane-Paeroa main highway to £350. An application by Evangelist L. R. Harvey for the lease of portion of the council reserve in Bennett street for the erection of a church was declined. The council pointed out that a municipal reserve could not be used for

such a purpose. A resident of De Castro street applied for metalling of his road access, stating that he had partly formed the road.

The application was declined, councillors pointing out that it was contrary to the by-laws for anyone to work on the streets. In any case the formation work' done would be useless as it was not in conformity with the foreman’s plans. The finance committee reported that during the past month the revenue in the district fund account amounted to £1132 6s 8d and the expenditure to £775 18s Id. After accounts were passed for payment the credit balance would amount to £2006 18s 4d.
