BOROUGH REPAIRS

POWER. BOARD WORK

INTERFERENCE TO RADIO

HAURAKI PLAINS EXTENSIONS.

Reporting to the Thames Valley Electric Power Board yesterday the chief engineer, Mr N. G. McLeod, stated that at Waitekauri the erection of poles on the main line and all service lines in the district, together with the necessary transformer platforms, stubs, anchors, etc., had been completed. Wiring was commenced on August 31. In normal circumstances, supply should be available within about two weeks, but as certain materials had not yet come to hand, although they were due, there might be some little delay. At Tirohia a 45 chain low tension extension on existing poles was completed during the month, supply being made available on August 30. Mill road: Poles had been distributed for a low tension extension over the stop-bank on this section.

Work was in progress on a 22 chain low tension extension at Komata, having been commenced on August 31.

Work in the Borough.

Hamilton’s road, Hauraki Plains : Poles had been distributed for a low tension extension on this road, and erection would be commenced immediately.

Paeroa Borough: Russell street and Wood street had been re-wired and supply was now satisfactory. Thirteen new street light brackets with 300 watt lamps were put into service in the main street during the month. After the last storm, radio interference caused considerable annoyance to users of receiving sets in the town. A lot of difficulty had been experienced in locating the cause or causes, but these had now been removed and good reception was reported. In order to give further supply an extra phase wire was run for 24 chains in Puke road.

Cable at Pipiroa.

At Pipiroa the damage caused by lightning to the 11,000 volt submarine cable boxes in July had now been repaired. The cable was put into commission again on August 4. The Hikutaia ferry road line was shut down for overhaul on August 12 and six 35 ft. poles, previously scheduled for renewal, and 32 cross.arms, were replaced. In order to improve supply, 70 chains of wire were replaced.

Kopuarahi road: The 11 Kv. line from Piako road to Pipiroa was shut down on August 27 to install a new 11 Kv. air-break switch on the northern side of the lime works branch line. Repairs could now be undertaken with a minimum of interference to consumers in this area.

Consumers at Fault.

This month also had been a very busy month, and the staff was fully extended. Attention was called to several instances recently where consumers had notified that their plants had been ready for electrical installation, but were not so. This had involved unnecessary expense and waste of time in the men having to make a double trip.

There was so much work to do that extra trips could not be afforded, and where consumers advised that they were ready when they were not, they were placed further down the list for completion than they otherwise would be.

' Throughout the whole area, there -were 115 services and sub-mains erected during the month.
