PIPIROA BRIDGE
SUBSIDY AGREED UPON COUNCIL’S CONTRIBUTION A FIXED AMOUNT ACCEPTED. Negotiations conducted between the Hauraki Plains County Council and the Main Highways Board regarding the erection of the bridge over the Piako river at Pipiroa have resulted in the board accepting a proposal from the county concerning its contribution to the cost. The county will pay on an estimated price of £lB,OOO for the structure. The ruling subsidy of £2 for £1 on the first £lO,OOO and £3 for £1 on the remainder will be paid by the highways board, ■ leaving the county’s contribution on the -estimate of £lB,OOO at £5333 6s Bd.
The board has agreed to accept that payment from the county even if the cost of the bridge exceeds the estimate.
It is estimated that the Public Works Department has the plans well in hand, but inquiries made by the Gazette this morning at the Paeroa office failed to elicit any definite information as to when the construction may commence as the plans are beingprepared in the Auckland office. As the work has been proceeding for some time, however, it is expected that the plans will be completed at an early date and that work will commence very shortly. The erection of the bridge will be undertaken by the department and not by the council.
